From Proto-Slavic *esetrъ. Cognate with Lithuanian ašėtras (sturgeon), еšketras (whale), Old Prussian esketres (sturgeon). Also related (with different vocalism) to Lithuanian ešerỹs, ašerỹs (perch), and (under the influence of erškė̃tis (bramble)) erškėtras, erškẽtas, arškẽtas (sturgeon).
