From Proto-Turkic *köpür (“bridge”).

Alternatively, derivation from Ancient Greek γέφυρα (géphura, “dam, bridge”) has been suggested.

Cognate with Kazakh көпір (köpir), Karakalpak көпир (köpir), Karachay-Balkar кёпюр (köpür), and Chuvash кӗпер (kĕper, “bridge”).

Note that many cognates (listed below) in fact come from the alternative archetype *köpürüg (“bridge”).
