күпер

Bashkir

Күпер

Etymology

From Proto-Turkic *köpür (bridge).

Alternatively, derivation from Ancient Greek γέφυρα (géphura, dam, bridge) has been suggested.

Cognate with Kazakh көпір (köpir), Karakalpak көпир (köpir), Karachay-Balkar кёпюр (köpür), and Chuvash кӗпер (kĕper, bridge).

Note that many cognates (listed below) in fact come from the alternative archetype *köpürüg (bridge).

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): [kʏˈpɪ̞r]
  • Hyphenation: кү‧пер
