From Proto-Turkic *kumursga (ant). Cognate with Old Turkic 𐰴𐰆𐰢𐰆𐰺𐰽𐰍𐰀 (qumursɣa, ant).

From a deminutive *qïmïrtqa-č with an earlier change of s into t common in clusters and a later epenthesis to break up a difficult cluster.
