кукурудза

Ukrainian

Etymology

The origin is unclear. Possibly from Proto-Slavic *kukur-, *kokor-, which is related to Slovene kukúrjav (curly) and Bulgarian кукуряк (kukurjak, hellebore).

It can also be borrowed from Romanian cucurúz, which itself was borrowed from Ukrainian кокорудка (kokorudka, cone, strobilus): a doublet.
