Unclear. No cognates in other Slavic languages. Possibly related to Ossetian къæбула (k’æbula, “young dog”). Trubachyov hypothesizes that the term originally referred to fur color, and explains it as *ко-бѣль, ultimately from Proto-Slavic *bělъ (“white”).
