From Proto-Slavic *ključь, from Proto-Indo-European *kleh₂u- (nail, pin, hook - instruments, of old use for locking doors). Cognate with Ancient Greek κλείς (kleís, key), Latin clāvus (nail) and Polish klucz (key).
