Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic исступлениѥ (isstuplenije), a calque of Ancient Greek ἔκστασις (ékstasis, ecstasy, literally out of step), from ис- (is-) (compare Russian ис- (is-, out)) and ступлениѥ (stuplenije) (compare Russian ступи́ть (stupítʹ, to step)).
