From Proto-Mongolic *jïru, with pre-breaking found in all modern languages. Perhaps related to Proto-Turkic *jaŕ- (“to write”), Proto-Turkic *čɨŕ- (“to draw”) or Proto-Tungusic *ńiru- (“to write”).
