Etymology

Attested once in a 1338 Middle Mongolian document as ᠵᠣᠭᠰᠤᠭᠤᠯᠪᠠᠰᠤ (ǰoɣsuɣulbasu, (if he) let (them) stop), but otherwise restricted to modern Central Mongolic.

Cognate with Buryat зогсохо (zogsoxo), Kalmyk зогсх (zogsx).

Replaced Proto-Mongolic *baï- in the sense 'to stand', see байх (bajh, to be).
