Probably a Turkic or Mongolic borrowing. Compare Kazakh жез (jez, “brass”), Tatar җиз (ciz, “brass”), Mongolian зэс (zes, “copper, brass”). Remodeled under the influence of жесть (žestʹ, “frozen soil”).
