From Proto-Mongolic *gutu-l, compare Dongxiang ghudusun.
Probably a Wanderwort connected with Manchu ᡤᡡᠯᡥᠠ (gūlha, “boots”), Korean 구두 (gudu, “shoes, boots”), Japanese 靴 (kutsu, “footwear, boots”).
