From Proto-Turkic *bütǖn (all, while, entire), derived from Proto-Turkic *büt- (to end, finish).

Cognate with Old Uyghur [script needed] (bütün, entire, integral; undamaged); Tatar бөтен (böten), Kumyk бютюн (bütün), Crimean Tatar bütün, Kazakh бүтін (bütin), Kyrgyz бүтүн (bütün), Southern Altai бӱдӱн (büdün), Uzbek butun, Turkmen bütin, Turkish bütün, Yakut бүттүүн (büttüün, all, entire), Chuvash пӗтӗм (pĕtĕm, whole, entire).
