From *bogun (joint, articulation; generation), derived from Proto-Turkic *bog- (to tie up, to strangle).

Cognate with Karakhanid [script needed] (boɣun, knuckle), Old Anatolian Turkish [script needed] (boğun, joint, knot); Kazakh буын (bwın, joint; generation), Kyrgyz муун (muun, joint; generation), Uzbek boʻgʻin (joint; generation).

Compare also Turkish boğum (knuckle, node, knot), Karakhanid [script needed] (boɣïm, the knuckles of the fingers) derived from the same root.
