From an onomatopoeia *bis; compare Bashkir бес-бес (bes-bes, “the sound used to call a cat”). Cannot be directly related to Standard Turkic mušuq ~ mišik "cat < Proto-Turkic *bɨńĺ(ɨk) (“cat”).
