From Proto-Turkic *(i)āka (elder brother; uncle).

Cognate with Old Uyghur [script needed] (aqa, elder brother), Kazakh аға (ağa, elder brother; uncle), Kyrgyz ага (aga, elder brother), Southern Altai ака (aka, elder brother), Crimean Tatar ağa (elder brother; uncle), Turkish ağa (master, boss), Yakut аҕа (ağa, elder; father).
