Etymology

From Ancient Greek ἀλφάβητος (alphábētos). The pronunciation with stress on the second syllable comes directly from the Greek, while the pronunciation with stress on the third syllable was altered, possibly by analogy to French, and gained prestige. Compare Ukrainian алфа́віт (alfávit).
