Иҙел

Bashkir

Etymology

Cognate with Old Uyghur [script needed] (Etil, a river name, presumably the Volga). Compare also with Atil, the name of the capital of historical Khazaria, situated in the Volga delta.

Theophanes the Confessor in the 9th century mentions the river as Ancient Greek Ατελ (Atel). Thus, it is still debatable if the river name is Turkic or pre-Turkic by origin.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): [iˈðɪ̞l]

  1. (historical) the Volga river (The Belaya + the Kama + Middle and Lower Volga)
