Etymology

From Koine Greek ὂ μικρόν (ò mikrón) (small O), in contrast to ὠμέγα ( μέγα, big O, omega). It took its name from the round shape of the Phoenician letter 𐤏 ayin, not from its name (like other letters: e.g. άλφα (álfa) / ἄλφα from aleph, βήτα (víta) / βῆτα (bêta) from beth, etc.)
