φρύνη
See also: Φρύνη
Ancient Greek
Alternative forms
- φροῦνος (phroûnos)
- φρῦνος (phrûnos)
Etymology
Maybe from Proto-Indo-European *bʰruHn-, the same root of Proto-Germanic *brūnaz (“brown”). However the presence of variations leads to a Pre-Greek origin.
Pronunciation
- (5th BCE Attic) IPA(key): /pʰrý.nɛː/
- (1st CE Egyptian) IPA(key): /ˈpʰry.ne/
- (4th CE Koine) IPA(key): /ˈɸry.ni/
- (10th CE Byzantine) IPA(key): /ˈfry.ni/
- (15th CE Constantinopolitan) IPA(key): /ˈfri.ni/
Mark the vowel length of the ambiguous vowel ύ by adding a macron after it if it is long, or a breve if it is short. By default, Module:grc-pronunciation assumes it is short if unmarked.
