φλέψ

Ancient Greek

Etymology

Traditionally linked to a large group of words beginning with "φλ-", like φλέω (phléō), φλύω (phlúō) and φλύκταινα (phlúktaina). It has been supposed to be an enlargement in -gʷ- of Proto-Indo-European *bʰel- (to blow, swell), but it would not solve anything. Thus, a Pre-Greek origin is the most probable hypothesis.
