From Proto-Hellenic *tíktō, from Proto-Indo-European *títḱeti, an i-reduplicated present formed from the root *teḱ- (beget, bring forth). Cognate with τέκνον (téknon, child), τέκτων (téktōn, builder), τέχνη (tékhnē, craft).
