Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *med- (to measure) and cognate with Ancient Greek μέδομαι (médomai, to provide for), Latin modus (measure; manner) and Proto-Germanic *mētō (measure). According to Beekes, from Pre-Greek because of the presence of the cluster "-μν-".
