From Proto-Hellenic *kow-a/o-, according to Gamkrelidze / Ivanov borrowed from Proto-Georgian-Zan *ṭq̇aw- (“hide, skin”); compare especially *ṭq̇ow-, a Zan archetype of Kartvelian.
