Uncertain. Could be from unattested *ζᾱτός, from the same root of δίζημαι (dízēmai, I seek), from Proto-Indo-European *deyh₂, *dyeh₂. See also ζῆλος (zêlos, zeal) and ζημία (zēmía, damage, loss).
