γωρυτός

- χωρυτός (khōrutós)
Etymology
According to Benveniste, a loanword from a Scythian compound that contains the word for 'cow' (compare Proto-Indo-Iranian *gā́wš) as a first member. The interpretation of the second member is unclear, however we can hardly identify it with Persian روده (rude, “intestine”) and interpret the whole compund as 'cow-hide'. Alternatively, Lubotsky suggests that the word may derive from a Proto-Iranian source similar to Sanskrit वरूतृ (varūtṛ, “one who wards off or protects”), thus explaining the long "ῡ".
