γλήνη

Ancient Greek

Etymology

Has been connected with Proto-Germanic *klainiz (shining), but Beekes finds this comparison uncertain. It has also been compared with γαλήνη (galḗnē, calm weather) and γλαινοί (glainoí, ornaments of head-bands). If this hypothesis be true, then the world would be of Pre-Greek origin.
