From Proto-Hellenic *auhrā, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂éwsr̥h₂ (“morning air”), from *h₂ews- (“dawn; east”). From a separate ablaut grade *h₂ewsḗr, the ancestor of ᾱ̓ήρ (āḗr).[1]
