Back-formation from the plural αφτιά (aftiá), extracted from article & noun τ' αφτιά (t' aftiá, “the ears”), from Medieval τά ἀφτία (tá aphtía) (singular τό ἀφτίον) from Koine τά ὠτία (tá ōtía) (singular ὠτίον) diminutive of Ancient Greek τᾰ̀ ὦτᾰ (tà ôta) (singular οὖς), through a regular phonological development of /ta.uˈti.a/ → (*/tavˈti.a/) → /tafˈti.a/ and αφτιά /aˈftça/, singular αφτί /aˈfti/. Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ṓws.
Etymology according to Georgios Hatzidakis, accepted by Babiniotis[1]. Other linguists[2] support the spelling αυτί from τ' αυτιά (t' aftiá) through /tawˈti.a/ - /tafˈti.a/. Similar case is the spelling of αβγό (avgó, “the egg”) or αυγό.
