Borrowed from Old Persian 𐎷𐎰𐎼𐎭𐎠𐎫 (*Miθra-dāta-, “given by Mithra”). Akin to Parthian 𐭌𐭕𐭓𐭃𐭕 (mtrdt), Persian مهرداد (Mehrdād).
