Etymology

Feminine form of Κάσσανδρος (Kássandros). Etymology unclear: first element possibly from κέκασμαι (kasmai) (*kas-) ("to shine"/"excel over"). Connected to Latin censeo ("honour") and Sanskrit sam-sayati ("announce"). Second element likely comes from ἀνήρ (anḗr, man). The rarer form Κεσ(σ)άνδρα appears to be more ancient, from Mycenaean "ke-sa-da-ra".
