Etymology

From Biblical Hebrew חַוָּה (ḥawwā).

Pronunciation

Proper noun

Εὔᾱ (Eúā) f (genitive Εὔᾱς); first declension

  1. Eve (wife of Adam)

Usage notes

There are two references to Adam’s wife by name in the Old Testament. The LXX translates the first occurrence (Genesis 3:20) with ζωή (zōḗ, life), and transliterates the second (Genesis 4:1) with Εὔα (Eúa). Both New Testament references use Εὔα (Eúa).
