Αἴτνη

Ancient Greek

Etymology

Suggested connection with Proto-Indo-European *h₂eydʰ- (burn; fire), with > t through Sicule dialect. If so, then cognate with Ancient Greek αἴθω (aíthō, I burn), Latin aestus (hot), aestās (summer), possibly aedis (shrine, temple).
