Etymology

Ultimately a derivation of Proto-Turkic *yül- (to shave, tear off, scrape off)[1], whence also Karakhanid یُولٖیماکْ (yülīmēk)[2] and Turkish yülümek. Cognate with dialectal Turkish yülgü and Karakhanid یُولٖیکوُ (yülīgü)[3], which Mahmud al-Kashgari described as a word unknown to the Oghuz Turks, who were said to use the word کِرایْ (kerey) instead[4].
