Lexicalization of the prefix ön- (self-). Proposed by István Széchenyi in analogy with the German form of address Sie, and popularized during the Hungarian language reform which took place in the 18th–19th centuries.[1]

Usage notes

Even though both ön and maga are used with the formal third-person verb forms, ön is generally considered more polite and respectful, but also more formal and distant. The choice between the two is also subject to the speakers' age and respective social status, as well as regional distribution, with younger generations and urban dwellers preferring ön over maga.[2]
