From Middle High German ënen, an inflected form of Old High German jēner (that, yon), from Proto-Germanic *jainaz (that over there, yon). Cognate to German jener, Dutch geen, English yon, Icelandic -inn, Swedish -en, Gothic 𐌾𐌰𐌹𐌽𐍃 (jains).
