From zwoord, a dialectal form of early modern Dutch zwaert, zweerd, from Middle Dutch swaerde (hairy skin), from Old Dutch *swarda, from Proto-Germanic *swardō (overgrown surface). Cognate with English sward, Icelandic svörður.
