From Proto-Indo-European *yugóm (“yoke”), with semantic change from "yoke" > "door" possibly due to Chinese influence. Also see Proto-Japonic *yəkə (whence Japanese 横 (よこ, yoko), Okinawan 横 (ゆく, yuku)) which may be borrowed from Tocharian.
