yhteiskoulu

1. (dated) co-ed school (school that teaches both girls and boys).

Currently all schools are co-ed in Finland and this term is therefore almost fallen out of use, except for the names of schools. For current school terminology, see esikoulu, peruskoulu and lukio. In its time, yhteiskoulu referred either to a keskikoulu (“junior high school, grades 5 to 9”) or oppikoulu (“grammar school, grades 5 to 12”) which tought both girls and boys. Co-eds for grades 10 to 12 were called yhteislukio. The schools above grade 5 teaching only boys were formerly called lyseo and those teaching only girls were called tyttölyseo. Grades 1 to 4 (kansakoulu) became obligatory for both sexes in 1921.
