From Middle High German wirken and würken/wurken. The verb wirken is derived from Proto-Germanic *wirkijaną, whereas the verb würken/wurken is derived from Proto-Germanic *wurkijaną. Both Proto-Germanic verbs are derived from Proto-Indo-European *werǵ-, *wṛǵ-.[1]
