From Proto-Germanic *wīhsilō, from Proto-Indo-European *weyḱs- (“mistletoe”). Cognate with Russian ви́шня (víšnja, “sour cherry”), Ancient Greek ἰξός (ixós, “mistletoe, birdline”), and Latin viscum (“birdlime”).
