From Proto-Vietic *vaɲʔ (“to twist”), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *wiɲ ~ *wiiɲ ~ *wəɲ ~ *waɲʔ (“to twist, turn, go round”); cognate with Proto-Katuic *waɲ (“to twist, wring”) (whence Pacoh véinh).
