From Middle Vietnamese ꞗua (“king”); compare North Central Vietnamese bua and the compound phân bua, attested in Dictionarium Annamiticum Lusitanum et Latinum.
Pronunciation
- (Hà Nội) IPA(key): [vuə˧˧]
- (Huế) IPA(key): [vuə˧˧]
- (Hồ Chí Minh City) IPA(key): [vuə˧˧] ~ [juə˧˧]
Usage notes
- Although this word is used to refer to monarchs of all kinds in the history of Vietnam (perhaps except Lý Chiêu Hoàng the empress regnant, but including the Trưng Ladies), most ones since the Triệu dynasty referred to themselves as hoàng đế (“emperor”). Their posthumous names also used hoàng or đế, and their temple names used various tổ/tông/tôn titles akin to Chinese and Korean emperors'. vương (“king; prince”), by itself, referred to the reigning monarch's relative nobles who had their own land granted by him. Except the Emperor of Japan (thiên hoàng (literally “Heavenly Emperor”) or Nhật hoàng (literally “Japanese Emperor”)), tsars (Nga hoàng (literally “Russian emperor”)) and female monarchs (nữ hoàng (“queen regnant”, literally “empress regnant”)), most modern monarchs are called quốc vương.
