Etymology

From vòda + -nik, based on vòdīk, coined by Bogoslav Šulek in the 19th century from the root of vòda (modeled after the Czech vodík).

Vladimir Njegovan suggested the term is irregularly formed, arguing the root used should have formed *vodenik.
