verstaander

Dutch

Etymology

From verstaan + -er. The suffix -er is normally attached to the verb stem (which is versta-) rather than the full infinitive, but in modern usage, the infinitive is chosen as the stem to avoid a hiatus. The -d- is epenthetic. Compare gaander.
