From Proto-Slavic *volxъ, ultimately from Proto-Germanic *walhaz. Used mostly as an exonym by other peoples for Romanian or Eastern Romance-speaking peoples in the Middle Ages. Compare român for the endonym. See also Aromanian vlah, Megleno-Romanian Vlași.
