From Proto-Germanic *unhailaz (not whole, unhealthy), equivalent to un- + hāl. Cognate with Old High German unheil, Old Norse úheill, Gothic 𐌿𐌽𐌷𐌰𐌹𐌻𐍃 (unhails).
