Etymology

From northern Old High German ahter, a variant of after (after, behind, along) with the northern West Germanic development -ft--cht-, which in Luxembourgish survives only in a small number of relict words (compare Luucht). Cognate with German After (anus) and achtern (abaft), Dutch achter (behind), English after.
