Metathetical alteration of Old Portuguese torvon (possibly influenced by troar (to thunder)), from Vulgar Latin *turbōnem (whirlwind), accusative of Latin turbō, turbinem, with altered declension. Compare Galician trebón, Spanish turbión (archaic or dialectal turbón). Doublet of turbina, from ultimately the same Latin root, through French.
