From Middle French toupie (“spinning top”), from Old French topoie (“spinning top”), from Frankish *topp (“spinning top”), from Proto-Germanic *tuppaz (“top, summit, peak”), so called because the toy spins on its tip, which is the top. Cognate with Old Dutch top, topp (“spinning top”) (Dutch top), West Frisian top (“spinning top”), Old English top (“spinning top”), Old High German topf (“spinning top”), French toupet (“toupee”) from the same Germanic source.
