Etymology

Of disputed origin. There are two equally possible theories:[1]

  1. From a Turkic language; compare Proto-Turkic *tilmaç, Chuvash тӑлмач (tălmač). The origin of the Turkish words is unknown.
  2. From a Slavic language; compare Slovene tolmač, Czech tlumač.
